02/27/2008 MWC Basketball Preview

(10-16)(6-20)

Moby Arnea 6:30PM MT TV:

This is the TV game for tonight? Wow! I have a post later about a response from someone who emailed The Mtn. about what games are shown. This is the last best chance for Colorado State to get a conference win. The game is at home and it is against a rival. To be honest who cares who wins this game, these two will play again in the 8/9 game in the conference play in game. Wyoming should win this game because they have better overall talent, but it will be close.

(15-10) (13-12)

Daniel-Meyer Auditorium 7PM CT TV:NONE

This the game that should be on The Mtn, but I guess since the channel is not available in Fort Worth I can see why. This game is crucial for Utah to stay in the race for a potential NIT bid. Do not figure this to be a gimme for Utah, because they play poorly on the road and TCU is a pretty good team when at home. TCU runs their press defense to get teams out of sync and this possibly good hurt the Utes. Utah needs to break the press early to get easy baskets to get a large lead to secure the win. Utes should take care of business on the road tonight.

The Mtn. is so low on the national scene

That is a shocker right?  Well I was listen to Fox Sports Radio this morning and they were talking about The Big 10 Network and something about them having the opposite problem as The Mtn with coverage on satellite  and none on cable.  One of the hosts mentions the Mountain West is starting a network sometime in August.  Well we all know here the channel has been around for two and a half years.  So, this really does show how low the channel is recognized.  They did say the channel has a cool logo, which is one of the things I like.

Week 14 MWC Basketball Power Rankings

1.(20-6)

The Rebels move up in part of BYU losing and that UNLV rebounded to defeat Wyoming after losing to BYU earlier.
2. (21-6)

Not really a shocker they lost, because SDSU is good on the road, but this team looks excellent at home. When tournament time comes BYU will most likely be one and done.

3.(18-9)

The Aztecs rebound nicely after a short skid where the team was 1-3 before defeating BYU. This win will bolster any at large possibilities for SDSU. Continue reading

2/23/08 MWC Basketball Preview

(21-6) (15-9)

John M. Huntsman Center 12PM MT TV:

The Lobos have found themselves clearly on the bubble of the NCAA tournament with 21 wins and a current 5 game winning streak. The Utes are not making the NCAA unless they win the conference tournament, but have been playing nearly at the level of New Mexico as of late. Road games were a problem for New Mexico but they have won their last 2 road games being at San Diego State and then crushing Air Force at Clune Arena a very tough place to play. The difference in this game is which team will give, because the Utes have the best defense in the league while New Mexico has the 3 point shooting in the league. New Mexico is looking to surpass UNLV as the second seed, but that does not really matter since the tournament is in Vegas so New Mexico might be better off dropping the 4th seed and missing UNLV until the finals. I am not saying New Mexico should throw this game or other games, but they might be better off in the 4th spot. Utah right now is on pace to be in the 4th or 5th seed, and possibly even get into the third spot since the rest of the schedule is pretty light with the exception of the New Mexico and at UNLV. This game has a lot to do with seeding and when last time these teams met it went into overtime with New Mexico winning by 10. This game will come down who can execute their strengths and slow down the oppositions weakness, but look for the Utes to pull this game out with their defense and the sharp shooter Johnnie Bryant.

(19-6) (10-15)

Auditorium Arena 230PM MT TV:

We all know Wyoming is not that good overall, but at home in wonderful Laramie they are an above average team. UNLV has slipped by getting crushed by BYU on the road and also Utah as well. This game should be a walk in the park for UNLV to get their game plan down. Wyoming does have similar offensive output as UNLV, but the difference is the defense with these two teams where Wyoming does not have a great defense. UNLV should roll this game in Wyoming to get their 20th win. Continue reading
