02/20/2008 MWC Basketball Preview

(6-18) (12-12)

Daniel-Meyer Coliseum 6:30PM CT TV:

This game is a battle for the cellar dwellers in the league. Colorado State is looking for their first victory of the year in league play, while TCU is trying to avoid the slip into the 8/9 spot which would require them to be in the play in game. TCU has the ability at home to defeat most opponents, by using their pressure defense to get easy baskets. Colorado State does have the JC transfer Marcus Walker who can score, but that is the extent of their offense. TCU should get this win and it might be the last of the regular season.

(20-6) (13-11)

Clune Arena 7PM MT TV: NONE

This game is very intriguing because Air Force is very good at home, but has been playing poorly of late. New Mexico has turned it around by winning 4 straight games but those wins have came against the lower part of the league. This game is of great interest because the teams are fighting for positioning for the conference tournament, plus New Mexico is trying to gather as many wins as possible for a gaudy record to earn a potential at large berth. This game should be a close one just because of the home crowd, but in reality both teams are heading in opposite directions, and New Mexico should win this game but do not be surprised if they lose.

(15-8) (20-5)

The Marriott Center 8PM MT TV:

This a slap in the face for this game to be on The Mtn. it should be on CSTV or Versus. I guess since CSTV can show the number one in country so can not blame them there, but maybe Versus? Oh well, maybe one day The Mtn. will appear on my dish before the contract expires.  On to the game BYU currently has a 44 home winning streak, and the last time the Cougars had a 40 plus game winning streak the Utes were the one’s that came into Provo and stopped that.  Well, this BYU team is probably the best team since they lost to Syracuse in the first round of the NCAA.  The way Utah has been playing of late with Luca Drca, Kim Tillie, and Johnny Bryant being able to defeat UNLV and SDSU, at home.  This game is always a huge rivalry and this will be no different, but if Utah wants to win they need big games from Johnny Bryant and Luke Nevill similar to when they both scored 20 points apiece in that UNLV win.   The way the complimentary players have played for Utah they do have a chance.  However BYU has Lee Cummard, Trent Plaisted, and Jonathan Tavernari.  On the road Utah has to be blown out so this game should be a good challenge tonight.  The same thing was said about UNLV when they came into Provo, but left with beat down.  Utah is obviously the underdog here and for them to have a chance to win they need to start of strong, unlike the early 0-11 start they had against the Aztecs on Saturday.  In this rivalry there are rarely blowouts, so this should be one of the best games of the year and look for BYU to extend their winning streak to 45.
