This topic comes up at least once a year, and an and article was wrote on expansion about a year ago on this site. This new talk comes from ESPNs blogger Graham Watson and from Boise radio host Paul J. Schneider who said ‘Boise State president Bob Kustra received an invitation from the Mountain West to join the league.’
The Mountain West and Commissioner Craig Thompson deny this report, and throws a jab at Boise State in the process
“My personal opinion is that they probably wouldn’t be 12-0,” Thompson said. “Take nothing away from Boise State, but I don’t know that they would go undefeated against the top four teams that are vying for the conference championship.”
Wait to go Commish toss a backhanded compliment to a team the league wants to bolster their football presence and attempt to gain an automatic bid for a BCS game. No need to go into details just go and read my post last year on this topic, because not much has changed.
The only thing is that the MWC will not discuss expansion until this summer, because of a halt on any expansion talk but I would not be surprised if this conversation took place about Boise joining the MWC. Why would Boise State want to join the Mountain West? Currently they are far and away the best team in the league nearly every year and win conference titles and have better exposure from the WAC taking over the MWC slots for ESPN games. Plus being in a tougher league would make it more difficult to go to a BCS bowl every few years.
On the other side the money that the Mountain West gets from their tv deal with CBS College Sports is more then ESPN and the geographical fit is there, and the chance to be in a higher profile league.
If Boise ever does join the MWC, then the league should just go to 12 teams, and try go get Fresno State, and then either Tulsa or Houston so that the coaches have more access to Texas and Northern California for recruiting, and to increase their tv viewerers.

Travel.
With Hawaii and La. Tech in the WAC, Boise has significant travel times and expenses. The MWC isn’t exactly compact, but it’d be a much easier budget to travel within the MWC than the WAC.
Also, going to the MWC would possibly bring another bowl game to the MWC (especially if they get to 12). That and the competitiveness between Utah, BYU, BSU and TCU would make the MWC the strongest mid-major and increase their argument for BCS inclusion. (BCS inclusion is still a real long shot, but it’d a better argument then.)
Lastly, expanding to 12 would split the conference into 2 divisions, and BSU would likely only have to play 2 of the other dominant 3 in any given year. That’s enough to bump the strength of schedule while not absolutely killing bowl hopes.
When the old WAC originally expanded to 16, they were careless about inclusion. Adding BSU to the MWC would be a smart expansion and one step to the conference championship game – just one more opportunity for a MWC school to improve their stock against the PAC-10 and Big 10 teams.
Thanks for the heads-up on this. It’s worth watching.
The last thing we would want to do, as the MWC, is add Boise State. It would only hurt our conference’s chances of ever landing a team in the BCS.
Boise State being a crappy school notwithstanding.
The only reason it would make sense to add the Broncos is IF AND ONLY IF the MWC gets a signed, written contract from the BCS committee that states we will be an automatic BCS-qualifying conference by doing so. And we would need the contract before we make the phone call to BSU.
If we add Boise State without such a guarantee, the best non-BCS teams will just beat each other up and no one wins.
Go Boise State. It is perfect Boise State in the MWC. the MWC would be more dominant than the PAC ten. But then again they already are.
Adam why not add bsu or fresno state or lets make a fantasy thingy you know(just to go with your MWC 12
Tulsa, and Utep would deside hey the c-usa tricked us lets go back to the WAC/MWC.
that would in turn leave the conferences looking like this
North:
Boise State*
Byu*
Utah*
Colorado State
Wyoming
Air Force *
South
Unlv
Fresno State*
Tulsa*
Utep*
New Mexico*
San Diego State
Tom I do not think the MWC wants to get this many teams, because it will look a lot like the old 16 team WAC that was a mess.
I wished there was more talk of SMU going to the MWC. They would increase conference’s presence in Texas and have the funding to rebuild their football program. They took a very big step in hiring June Jones as HC. They are also outstanding academically. I would gamble on the upside.
Boise State is a no-brainer, but Rice and Tulsa should be given strong consideration because of their academics and athletics. The BCS conferences, perhaps except for the Big East, are very strong academically. Boise State is on their way to becoming a Tier 1 school, which Rice and Tulsa already are. Those three football programs combined for 31 wins this season and would give the MWC eight Tier 1-type programs, better than the Big East and just behind the Big XII.
If the Mountain West Conference wants people to think they are better than the ACC or Big East, they need to let people compare. They need to play games against the Big East and ACC. Preferably, they would play against the highest-ranked teams. They can take advantage of the fact those teams are overrated. If you beat a #10 team, it doesn’t matter if they are good or not. So if it’s easier than beating a #20 MWC team, then you should schedule them. It just makes sense..
You talk about that as if schools can just pick and choose who they’ll play. But the thing you have to remember is that most Big East and ACC schools avoid the Mountain West like a filthy disease, and they have the power in the scheduling relationship. It looks bad losing to a non-BCS school, but the Big East and ACC have already been criticized enough that they can’t afford to take a risk like that.
Props to Florida St for scheduling an even series with BYU.
no they shouldnt join mwc. once you go wac you dont go back
It would be a big plus to add Boise State. Also Fresno State and another Texas team like Houston.
BYU
Utah
Boise State
TCU
Fresno State
San Diego State
Colorado Stage
Wyoming
Air Force
Houston
Yes that would make the league tough, I would love Houston because it would create a much larger fan base and help in recruiting. I also would take Tulsa because they are still near TCU and are a quality school
Look the truth is boise state needs to stay out of MWC. Sure MWC is hot right now but that won’t last. Boise state needs to continue to dominate the Wac for 5 to 10 more years and by that time the Pac-10 will have to expand as well as the Big Ten, and big east Big East. Boise State will have grown by this time and because of the new 8 team playoff system, the MWC will expand to 12 and conf usa and mac will combine there best teams to create another strong 12 team eastern conference.
8 major conferences each champion gets a auto bid to the college football playoffs. Playoff seed is determand by strength of conference.

==========
What happens to UNLV
The Mountain West should add five new teams and kick out two.
Add Boise State and Fresno State from the WAC and UTEP, Tulsa, and Houston from C-USA.
Then kick out San Diego State and Wyoming.
This would be the twelve team BCS conference.
NORTH
Air Force
BYU
Colorado State
Utah
Boise State
UNLV
SOUTH

New Mexico
TCU
Tulsa
UTEP
If only three teams are added and SDSU and Wyoming stay, they should be Fresno State, Boise State and UTEP. UTEP should be the team from C-USA because of it’s rivalries with the old WAC teams.
My Dream MWC: (12 teams/ 2 divisions/ Football Championship Game/ BCS Automatic Bid)
MWC Sierra:
BYU
Utah
San Diego State
UNLV
Hawaii
Fresno State/ Nevada
MWC Ponderosa:
Boise State
TCU
Colorado State
Air Force
Wyoming
New Mexico

I would love to strengthen the MWC to 12 with a North and South. But in this dream I drop Air Force and pick up Colorado, and then have Boise State, Fresno State, and Nevada come on board. Two great football schools and two great basketball schools. Air Force becomes independent and plays Army and Navy and Notre Dame, and UTEP or Tulsa joins Big 12.

Champion: Winner of North v. South, goes to a BCS Bowl.
To clarify: Each team has to play all the teams in its division and 3 teams from the other division, with 4 non-MWC slots available.
Sorry, one more detail. Why does Colorado do this? You’d have to convince them that they have a better shot at a BCS bowl, the competition in a 12-team system with a champion will attract elite recruits, and they will be squaring off with an in-state rival. It’d be a tough sell, but if you could you’d have some incredible football.
Very true why Colorado leave the 2nd most profitable football league for one that is not there, yet. Colorado would be better off going to a newly formed Pac-10 then leave to join a new MWC.
We all know now that the wac is bad, BSU is BAD ASS and we won the fiesta you wont the fiesta and suger, why would you not want 2 already proven winners that beat BCS teams when there in bowl games in one league, that would give MWC the props of saying hey we have multiple BCS win teams here not just one or just a fluke, this is the real deal BCS give our leagues 12-0 team a shot at the title.Boise st wont get a shot at it withouht comp like BYU and Utah and TCU and they wont get the shot with out BSU, clearly 3 undefeated seasons by Utah and BSU at BCS bowl games proves that.
