Preview 2009 New Mexico Opponents: Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Tulsa will have to replace 4,059 yard passer David Johnson with junior Jacob Bower.  Also, the Golden Hurricane will need to replace their top rusher Tarrion Adams who had 1,523 yards, and also their top receiver Brennan Marion who had over 1,100 yards.

All of these loses will make it very hard for Tulsa to repeat their 2008 offensive output that was second in the nation.  All is not lost for Tulsa, because when David Johnson took over for Paul Johnson for the 2008 season he did a good job taking over and keeping the offense in the top 10 nationally.

Passing Com% Yards TD INT
Jacob Bower 73.3 138 1 1
Rushing Carries Yards Yards Per Carry TD
Jamad Williams 86 523 6.1 3
Charles Opeseyitan 45 355 7.9 2
Receiving Catches Yards Yards Per Catch TD
Slick Shelley 39 627 16.1 8
Damaris Johnson 47 608 12.9 9
Trae Johnson 20 475 23.8 3

Jacob Bower is the front runner but he needs to watchout for former three star sophomore G.J. Kinne, who began his career at Texas, and true freshman Shavodrick Beaver, who enrolled early and went through spring practice.

Most likely playing time will win out, bub Kinne sat out last year to learn the system and Beaver learned in the Spring, so this is a race to watch out for.  So, who ever gets the started job should put up monster numbers and compete for a C-USA title.

In contrary to popular belief Tulsa does run the ball, because last year they were fifth in the nation in running the ball.  Now all Tulsa has to do is replace Tarrion Adams who had over 1,500 yards and 14 scores.

That responsibility goes to Jamad Williams and Charles Opeseyitan both combined for just under 900 yards.  The reason Tulsa is able to run the ball is because their passing game is so prolifient with the deep ball, and that leaves running room for the backs.  The Golden Hurricane actually run about sixty percent of the time.

In the receiver department they do lose big play wide out Brennan Marion who averaged 25.9 per catch.  What does this mean, well nothing really as the next player will step up and become the depth threat.

This is the position with the least worries with their next five wide outs back from 2008.  The way coach Todd Graham runs his pass attack everyone gets the ball; that is the way Tulsa has been so successful since they can manipulate matchups to their advantage.  One last note on the offense is that Herb Hand was promoted from line coach to replace -Gus Malzahn, who went to Auburn to be their offensive co-ordinator.

Now on to defense, umm yes defense is something Tulsa needs to improve on.  They gave up 27 points per game and ranked 78th in the nation in that category, but more importantly were middle of the pack in C-USA.  The difference was only six points from 2008 champ East Carolina.

They are a more experienced team with returning players, but the defense has taken the bend and not break policy and let the offense win games.

Mountain West Football Week 4 Review

44 0

Another dominant performance on both sides of the ball, BYU has two consecutive shutouts and has outscored their opponents 103-0 in their past two games.  Watching this game Wyoming actually had a very successful game plan early on, by running misdirection plays and throwing short quick throws.  The game was close for about a quarter and a half before the Cougar offense was able to make a splash.

The six turnovers did not help at Wyoming, who had a fumble returned for a touchdown by BYU on a lateral pass on the first offensive play.  Then there was an interception returned late in the third quarter.  BYU mainly used their running game to defeat Wyoming, and Wyoming’s rush defense is a solid one but Fui Vakapuna who is now a full back after being the teams running back had a great game with 28 yard not much but he runs hard and had 5.6 yards per carry.

Max Hall had a very average day by throwing for 189 yards, with 62 one play to Austin Collie, but he did throw for three scores before leaving the game in the mid way of the third period.

Colorado State surprised most with this win against University of Houston.  Colorado State was able to stay turnover free, which can not be said for Houston who turned the ball over four times.  The game started off well with Colorado State quarterback Billy Farris who had a 79 touchdown pass within the first minute and then lead the Rams to a 21-3 during the first half.

Houston who is a passing team did throw for 380 yards, but the Cougars did not have the ball enough during the game.  The time of possession favored Colorado State 37 to 22 minutes with their running game of Gattrell Johnson III and Kyle Bell.

The  Cougars were finally able to make a dent in the Rams defense by closing the gap 21-17 in the third quarter with their passing game, but the Rams offense scored their only points in the second half with a Kory Sperry touchdown reception to put the Rams up 11 in the fourth, and a late touchdown by Houston was not enough.

This was very close to a complete game for Colorado State, they had no turnovers,  held the ball for 15 more minutes, and the big key was Billy Farris who his best game of the year.

The best matchup of the day put two undefeated teams against each other in Colorado Springs.  If someone were to look at the stats of this game one would assume that Utah won by a couple of touchdowns.  Air Force ran for only 53 yards in comparrision to over 200 in their previous three games, Utah had Darrell Mack and Matt Asiata rush for over 100 yards each, time of possession favored the Utes by 13 minutes, and Utah out gained the Falcons nearly four to one.

However that was not the case as the game went down to the final  moments.  Utah had turnovers at the worst times and Air Force that lead to nine points and normally automatic Louis Sakoda missed two fields goals.  The most surprising thing in this game was that Utah was able to shutdown the Falcons running game with their top two tackles out for multiple weeks.  Air Force did have key runs for gains at certain times, but to hold an Air Force team to uner 60 yards is amazing.  Typically if you can hold them below 175 that is a good game.

Utah showed that they have the talent to over come these mistakes to win close games.

Tulsa very well could be the best team from outside a BCS league, yeah BYU fans they could be better then the Cougars.  The reasoning is that Tulsa has one of the most prolific passing attacks in the country and beat a New Mexico defense that is set up to not get beat deep or often in the passing game with their 3-3-5, but by virtue of them not playing any BCS league opponents they most likely will not make it up the polls high enough to make a real push for a BCS game.

Tulsa did look very good in this game quarterback David Johnson in this game had 469 yards and six touchdown passes with a average of 12 yards per attempt!  Just a note he has 1,219 yards, 15 touchdowns, and only two picks on the year.

Tulsa’s defense also is very good as they were able to get four interceptions and limit the New Mexico passing game to under 200 yards.  The lone bright spot for New Mexico was running back Rodney Ferguson who had 122 yards and a touchdown.

Tulsa just threw the ball around at will in this game and had three players at 98 yards or more in this game, and had no trouble with the Lobo defense.

Running back Aaron Brown finally made his season debut, I wonder if coach Patterson talked to the higher ups to allow Brown to play this week so that his first live game action was not against Oklahoma on the road.  Brown ended up with over 100 yards rushing and receiving and just adds another weapon to the Horned Frog offense.

TCU played a well round game with a near 50/50 split with the rushing and passing yards.  TCU did not beat SMU with home run plays most were mid range gains, with the only exception was when back up quarterback Marcus Jackson ran for a 79 touchdown in the fourth quarter.

One can not review a TCU game and not mention the defense, as they held SMU to 210 total yards with a rushing defense that finished with SMU losing eight yards on the night, then toss in three turnovers TCU forced in the game.

This TCU team is very dangerous and can very well challenge and beat Utah or BYU in the coming weeks.

Is UNLV for real, or is this a mirage of beating a bad team in Iowa State.  Either way MIke Sanford almost certainly saved his job for another year by getting the most wins since 2003 when UNLV won six games.

The Rebels handed Iowa State their 13th straight road loss, and this was the second week in a row that UNLV defeated a team in overtime.

UNLV looked to have the game all wrapped up with a 21-0 lead in to the mid way point of the second half.  Then Iowa State lead behind Austen Arnaud who scored all four touchdowns and help the Cyclones out score UNLV 28-7 to force overtime.

UNLV had a very balanced game that had running back Frank Summers rush for over 100 yards in this game and quarterback Omar Clayton with 235 yards passing and three scores plus 24 yards on the ground.

The Rebel defense played an extremely well first have, but gave up all the points and most of the yards in the second which allowed the Cyclones to come back.

Iowa State tied the game with three seconds left in regulation and then scored first in overtime with a field goal, but then coach Mike Sanford decided to run the same fade pattern that helped UNLV win against Arizona State, and the play worked again and UNLV won on the first play.

Conference play begins for BYU, and we will see if BYU can keep its momentum from last weeks beat down against UCLA. This defense will be the best that the Cougars have faced so far this year. Wyoming so far has given up only 18 points per game, and only 292 total yards per game. In saying that Wyoming has yet to see this type of offense, and while Wyoming has a pretty good defense they will have trouble slowing down the BYU offense.

Wyoming has a chance if quarterback Dax Crum can have success against the BYU secondary when passing the ball. BYU should be able to counter their less then stellar secondary by applying pressure to Wyoming and make Crum throw the ball quickly. Devin Moore at running back must have success in the running game to keep the BYU defense honest to help Wyoming try to stay in the game.

The Cowboys do not have the overall offensive package to move the ball consistently against BYU, mainly because Wyoming has only been able to score 13 a game so far and that includes a win over FCS school North Dakota State last week.

The Wyoming defense is good, but even if the Pokes can slow down running back Harvey Unga the Cougars will be able to pass the ball to tight end Daniel Pita, or wide out Austin Collie. Wyoming will not be able to stop both the run and the pass, but if they can slow down one of the two and create some turnovers then Wyoming could make this interesting.

BYU needs to score and win by a lot to keep their name in the national headlines to help them move up in the polls.

Final Score: BYU 42 Wyoming 13

Colorado State returns to action after a week off, and now face Houston who brings a pretty good offense to town. Houston has been out of sync after Hurricane Ike made landfall last week and still has many thousands of still without power.

The Rams were off last week after defeating Sacramento State at home. Colorado State will have a tough time stopping or even slowing down the Houston high octane offense. The Cougars have quarterback Case Keenum who has 13 touchdowns to one interception and has completed 63 percent of his passes. Even though Houston ranks second nationally in passing yards, their running game is effective enough to make the opposing defense to respect the run as well.

The Ram offense on the other hand is ranked 82nd nationally and have yet to find much success throwing the ball. Their best offensive player is running back Gatrell Johnson III, but he only has 168 yards in two games, but does average over five yards per carry.

If Houston plays like they did in the second half against Air Force look for them to be able to run away with this game early and leave the Rams struggling to compete.

Colorado State’s best chance is to use the running game to eat the clock and keep the Cougars offense on the sideline.

Final Score: Houston 34 Colorado State 17

#20 (3-0)(3-0)

Falcon Stadium 2PM MT TV: Radio: KALL 700 Sports and 740 KVOR

This battle of unbeatens takes place at the home of the Air Force Falcons. Air Force is a different and much better team at home then they are on the road. The Falcons have won seven straight home games, and their lost home loss came against these same Utes on November 18, 2006 with a 17-14 loss.

These two teams always play each other very close, and part of it is because of the Falcons unique run option offense they implement. This year the Falcons had to replace multiple players but no matter who they plug in the team does well. The Falcons have ran the ball 71, 63, and 76 times in each of their first three games, the running game will be the key for Air Force this week.

The Falcons do not have a star player like Chad Hall who they had last year, but the players they put in are very effective. If the Falcons run 60 rushing plays then they will have a very good chance of defeating Utah, because of the time of possession will favor the Falcons quite a bit.

Also, a thing to keep an eye on is the dive play that the Falcons no doubtingly will run because of the rash of injuries that the Utes have at their two defensive tackle positions.

Utah will need to step up and score touchdowns in this game and not settle for field goals. Plus, the Utes will need to stabilize their return game, because last week against Utah State the Utes gave up or muffed four returns. Look for Brent Casteel or junior college transfer Aiona Key to get some looks. Key has finally arrived from junior college to join the Utes and could see a few plays at wide receiver in this game.

This will be the Utes toughest test to date in the running game, and everyone knows Air Force will run and run a lot, so if Utah can create turnovers on defense and limit the Falcons to under 200 yards rushing they will win.

Final Score: Utah 24 Air Force 14

(1-2) (2-0)

Chapman Stadium 6PM MT TV: NONE Radio: 770 KKOB

This will be an interesting game, because for all the talk about East Carolina in C-USA Tulsa might actually be better. The Golden Hurricane will throw the ball a lot in this game, so far this season they have averaged 395 yards per game passing which is third in the nation and they also are third in total offense with 582 per game. Tulsa is 6th in the nation in scoring offense by averaging 50 points per game. Their opponents so far have been nothing great in UAB and North Texas, but Tulsa is expected to be a high scoring offense anyways.

New Mexico on the other hand has trouble stopping teams by allowing 27 per game. The Lobos will need to apply pressure and make Tulsa quarterback, David Johnson throw sooner then he would like to. Johnson on the year has 750 passing yards, nine touchdowns, zero picks, and a 78.9 completion percentage.

The Lobos gave up a lot of yards and points so far in the season, so if this game does get into the 30’s for either team then look for Tulsa to win. However, New Mexico has running back Rodney Ferguson can help the Lobos control the time of possession and give them a decent chance to stay in the game and maybe win.

Final Score: Tulsa 41 New Mexico 31

(3-0) (1-2)

Gerald J. Ford Stadium 6PM CT TV: Radio: 103.3 ESPN Radio

June Jones has yet to fully bring his high octane offense to Dallas from Hawai’i, but this will be the stiffest pass offense that TCU has seen this year. For the third straight game TCU is without star running back Aaron Brown for violating university policies.

TCU has the defense to slow down SMU, part of that falls on SMU since they have been one dimensional this year by running for only 44 yards per game which is 118th in all of college football.

For all the yards SMU puts up on offense they also throw a lot picks, eight so far, and TCU has a plus 10 margin in the turnover department this year.

SMU on defense is not very good this year, and even if you take away the Texas Tech game where SMU allowed 43 points the Mustangs gave up 56 in a loss to rice and then 36 in a win over FCS Texas State. TCU is by no means an offensive power, but the offense has had the luxury to work with short fields and make the most of those in the running game even without Aaron Brown.

This could be a trap game if TCU looks ahead to the Oklahoma game in Norman next week, but Coach Gary Patterson will do his best to keep the team focused on SMU.

Final Score: TCU 31 SMU 17

(2-1) (2-1)

Sam Boyd Stadium 6PM PT TV: Radio: 1100 ESPN Radio

UNLV is looking to get its third win of the season which would be the most by the program since the team went 6-6 in 2003. The Rebels also are on a high after defeating then #15 Arizona State on the road, so the home crowd should be pumped for this game.

The Cyclones have lost six straight road games dating back to the 2006 season. The Cyclones will have to rev up their defense to stop running back Frank Summers who is a power back and will wear down nearly any defense. Then they must find a way to cover wide receivers Casey Flair, Philip Payne and Ryan Wolfe both who are play makers once they catch the ball. These three account for 493 of the teams 590 passing yards.

Iowa State has not had a difficult schedule so far, they have beaten Kent State and FCS South Dakota State before losing on the road to instate rival Iowa 17-5. The only game where the Cyclones were impressive was against Kent State when they won 48-28, but that was mainly from their defense getting short fields for the offense by creating four turnovers. UNLV better take care of the ball then in this game and not give Iowa State short fields.

UNLV will need to watch the running back duo of Phillip Bates and Alexander Robinson these two have lead Iowa State in rushing and have averaged just over 5 yards per carry, but the Cyclones give the ball to multiple players near the goal line for the short scores.

Interceptions are a concern for Iowa State, so far this year they have three on the year to go along with only four touchdown passes. That could be a concern for Iowa State. I am going to take the plunge and jump on the UNLV band wagon for another win.

Final Score: UNLV 24 Iowa State 20

MWC looks into expansion

There have a flurry of articles popping up on the internet and local news about how the Mountain West is entertaining the idea of discussing expansion in June and the team that pops up the most is the Boise State Broncos. There are two good articles that I found in the Utah paperse and one is from the Salt Lake Tribune and the other coming from KUTV which I think gives a better look and puts into perspective more then just Boise State.

If this were a reality I would see it coming at the earliest in 2009 season and that might give enough time to reschedule games and all the logistics. The reason that there has not been any expansion talk is because there was a three year freeze on expanding once TCU joined the league. This June is when the league could possibly discuss and I think they should discuss to have 9 conference football games and get rid of the I-AA teams that the conference has been scheduling. Below is a list of schools that I think would be a viable option, and they are in alphabetical order.

Boise State This one for football purposes is obvious, because they moved up the ranks from I-AA to national attention in about a decade, and just by adding this team for football would give the conference more national credibility. Plus the conference would be creeping up on the ACC and Big East in overall football play. As for the other sports Boise would need to add baseball and softball (which is in the works), the market size really does nothing for TV, and recruiting does not get an advantage there. Boise is improving in basketball so it will not be a doormant in other sports. Football is the money maker and getting an autio bid into BCS is the goal, or at least sending a team there each year by getting an at-large berth. Travel would be a concern but Boise is getting big enough where there are non stop flights to Denver, Salt Lake, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, San Diego, and Dallas. Continue reading
